Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

Gastroenterology Associates uses a procedure called flexible sigmoidoscopy to see inside the last third of the colon (which is called the sigmoid colon) as well as the rectum. Flexible sigmoidoscopy is used to look for early signs of cancer and can help doctors diagnose unexplained changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, bleeding from the anus and weight loss. This procedure is similar in nature to a colonoscopy, but it only examines the last third of the colon (as opposed to a colonoscopy which examines the entire colon and rectum).
